BENZIGER RESERVE

2003 CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Price $43.99 bottle | $35.99 case

WINE DESCRIPTION:

At their best, the 2003 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignons display a touch of elegance that is sometimes not present in the wines from other riper, richer vintages--which makes these wines a bit closer in style to the best of Bordeaux than we like to admit. But here it is, and this 2003 Reserve is a lovely wine. It is restrained and fine in character, yet full bodied and very long and rich on the palate, with a finish that just won’t quit. In aroma and flavor, think of dark chocolate, black cherry, black currant, toast, oak, and vanilla--and you might be close. For drinking over the next 2-5 years. Enjoy with Filet Mignon in Port or Madeira Sauce, Roast Duck in Olive Sauce, New York Steak, or Beef Stroganoff.

CLOS DU BOIS

2005 RUSSIAN RIVER RESERVE CHARDONNAY

Price $17.99 bottle | $13.99 case

WINE DESCRIPTION:

Brilliant silver, straw yellow in color, this aromatic Chardonnay explodes with scents of mandarin citrus, ripe pear and lime, intermingled with jasmine, clove and notes of oak spice. The palate is bright and juicy, with refreshing flavors of ripe pear and citrus. The wine’s lush, well-integrated oak and smooth, creamy texture were achieved by aging it sur lie for eight months before bottling.

CLOS DU BOIS

2003 MARLSTONE

Price $69.99 bottle | $57.99 case

WINE DESCRIPTION:

The introductory, 1978 vintage of Marlstone stands as the first release of a Bordeaux-style wine from Sonoma County. The release of the 2003 vintage of this wine thus marks the 25th anniversary of Marlstone, and is the first vintage of this historic cuvée which winemaker Erik Olsen has shepherded from vineyard to bottle.

This wine’s inky, deep, ruby color promises intensity and depth. Its generous nose reveals layers of aromas: from black cherry, vanilla, toasted oak and cedar to nutmeg, cinnamon, blackberry and notes of violet and sweet tobacco. Ultra-rich and round, this powerful, generous wine offers up ripe blackberry and black licorice flavors on the palate and a lasting, memorable finish.

GEYSER PEAK

2004 ALEXANDER valley CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Price $17.99 bottle | $14.99 case

WINE DESCRIPTION:

This wine is a classic example of Geyser Peak’s intense, lively style of Cabernet Sauvignon. Uplifted fruit flavors of red and black cherry predominate in the aroma, but the underlying complexity hints at undertones of blackberry, dark chocolate and spice. In typical Geyser Peak style, the bright fruit is nicely supported by restrained oak. The palate is round and lush, beautifully pairing the cherry and berry fruit with a hint of spice and vanilla. The fine tannins meld into a persistent, lingering finish.

GEYSER PEAK

2005 MERITAGE

Price $55.99 bottle | $41.99 case

WINE DESCRIPTION:

Smooth, rich and silky, this handcrafted wine finds its center around a deep core of blackcurrant, black cherry and raspberry fruit. Spice, cedar and earth notes add complexity, but it’s the generous fruit and supple texture that anchor the mid-palate. Aiming for elegance over brawn, this voluptuous wine finishes with ripe tannins and a luxurious aftertaste that keeps on going. Overall, the 2004 Reserve Alexandre is a quintessential example of Alexander Valley terroir and of the region’s supreme uitability for nurturing Bordeaux varieties.
